MY REVIEW OF MY ADVANCED COPY

My advanced copy of No Security arrived in the mail today Saturday October 3 at precisely 1:20pm, and I ran out in the rain to the mailbox to retrieve it with great anticipation! I had an advanced copy of Bridges To Babylon last fall & it certainly is a wonderful feeling when you can have a listen to a new Stones album way before the general public is able to buy it. Once again, I SINCERELY THANK my secret source for my copy. Please do NOT email me & request a copy, no can do, sorry. I popped this baby into the cassette player & sat down to listen & take some notes. Upon first listen, here are my impressions, rather than a formal review (I'll leave that to the experts): First off, this is certainly a unique release beginning with the cd cover itself (see above, original is on color). The cover of the cd features 2 heavily tattooed concert goers posed against the backdrop of the Babylon stage & behind them to their left is a security guy, on which you can only read the "curity" on the back of his shirt. Around the cd is pictured black & yellow security or police tape. No where on the front cover does it say Rolling Stones or No Security. That information is found only on the spine of the cd. The album features tracks taken from shows in Amsterdam Arena, Holland; River Plate Buenos Aires, Argentina; Zepplinfield Nuremberg, Germany; TWA Dome St. Louis, Missouri; and MTV's Live At The 10 Spot. There are guest appearances on track #5 by Dave Matthews, track #6 Taj Mahal and track #8 Joshua Redman. The album is of course on the Virgin label, produced by the Glimmer Twins, with Chris Potter (Z Managment) providing additional production & mixing. The cd was mastered at Metropolis Mastering by Tony Cousins. The album begins with the meteor soundscape by Crunch Recording Group, Toronto, that we heard at the start of all the B2B shows. The crowd is mixed in such a way that you think you are listening to one live show, although Mick speaks a few different languages in his banter with the crowd throughout. No Security flows very well from track to track. You feel like You Got Me Rocking is starting off the concert & you would think it was, if you didn't already know that Satisfaction was the opening number this tour. Obviously a rocker & a good first choice to get the listener into the record. Most likely this release, as with the majority of live Stones releases will only appeal to Stones fans, and not the public at large, but for Stones fans it is definitely a treat. We are getting some great versions of live songs that before we only treasured on our various bootlegs. Gimme Shelter, a personal all-time favorite of mine, is from Live At The 10 Spot, and if you saw that show on MTV you know this version kicks. Keith's searing guitar work & Lisa's powerful vocals are superb. Next we merge into Flip The Switch, Mick says something in Dutch at the start so I assume this track is from Amsterdam Arena. Mick also starts out singing "a heap of flesh & a pile of bones. Track 5 is Memory Motel, another favorite of mine and highlight of the B2B tour for me (especially the version they did in Philadelphia), but I can't say that putting the Dave Matthews' guest vocal on this track did it any justice whatsoever. In fact, IMHO, it ruined the song completely! As you can tell, I am not at all a DM fan and if Mick thinks that by putting this track on No Security he will sell a few more albums to today's younger audiences, he may be right, but his long time fans for the most part will not be happy with this officialy released live version they have waited so long to hear. At least Mick's & Keith's vocals were well done :-) Corinna, with Taj Mahal, on the other hand, is a wonderfully done track, I think adding the guest vocals of a fellow bluesman is a bit more appropriate. Besides, Taj Mahal played with the Stones at Rock & Roll Circus, so he deserves his track & it's a great one, recorded at the TWA Dome for the pay per view in Dec. 97. Saint of Me has become another crowd pleaser and no where else do the Stones get the crowd reactions like the do in Argentina, on this version you can hear the "ole oles" and the "yeah oh yeah's" till the very end. Waiting On A Friend was also a wonderful version, again from the St. Louis pay per view, with Josh Redman on sax. And of course, for Stones fans, a live version of the Sticky Fingers gem, Sister Morphine, is a must. It was another rarity they pulled out & carried off with finesse for this tour. Mick's acoustic guitar seems mixed up front pretty well on this track too. Track 10, Live With Me, is absolutely killer, too bad it is cut in the middle of my copy, can't wait to hear it all in one piece on the offical cd. Respectable seems a different version than the one I heard them play at MSG in January, on this track the backing vocals were done a bit differently & are more upfront. Thief In The Night, well what can I say in my own little biased Keithian persective? Fabulous job Keith...this one from Germany, when Keith was indeed glad to be back & he showed it. I was particularly thrilled with The Last Time, this version is excellent all the way through, although we always are hoping that this is NOT the last time! The cd ends with an almost 8 minute version of Out Of Control & since I haven't heard the promo Don Was mix of OOC I can't compare it, but this version again from Argentina just confirms why this track has become a concert staple & crowd favorite and the cheers from the crowd lead us to the end of the cd. So, upon first listen, I am very happy with this new live cd. Of course, I would have loved to have had 19th Nervous Breakdwon on there, but You Can't Always... After two weeks of listening, I am still enjoying No Security. The guitars are mixed really well & you can really hear a separation between Ron's & Keith's guitars, plus you can even pick out Mick's acoustic on Sister Morphine. The distinction between instruments is well done. I have also had the pleasure of receiving the Japanese copy (thanks TF!) of No Security which contains the bonus track "I Just Wanna Make Love To You", which if you had the chance to hear this blues ditty on tour, you will know it's well worth ordering the Japanese copy of NS.

    NO SECURITY 1999 TOUR!

Tour dates will be announced Monday November 16th & tickets for some venues such as Philadelphia, Cleveland & Pittsburgh will be on sale as early as November 21st. Early press rumors had fans in a tizzy with quotes of $300 & up, reality seems to be that tickets will range from $39.50 up to $300 for most venues depending on size. This is an arena tour ladies & gentlemen, so be aware that tickets will be higher for a 20,000 seat venue than a 70,000 seat venue! But if you haven't caught the Stones in an arena yet, here's your chance. Having seen 6 arena shows for Bridges To Babylon, I can say it's well worth the extra cash! I plan to see Philly, Pitt, Cleveland, DC & possibly Toronto, hope to see you there! If not, catch ya in Edinburgh, Sheffield or London in the summer!
